Want to talk about the past? One day, Michelle pi Want to talk about the past?

One day, Michelle picked up a copy of The Not-So-Lazy Schwa. Actually, she picked up several copies. For friends. Obviously. 🩷📚

Fast forward to a reading conference in 2024, where Michelle finds herself sitting right behind Yvette Manns, author of beloved Phonics Read-Alouds. Cue the mutual fangirling. Turns out the admiration went both ways, the connection was instant, and the love for words was very real.

From that moment on, they stayed connected: cheering each other on from afar, presenting at conferences together, and dreaming big about what high quality literacy instruction could look like for all kids.

Then one day, Yvette asked Michelle (who she always referred to as the morphology queen 👑) if she’d want to create a morphology read-aloud series together.

Uhh… YES. A resounding yes!

And just like that, The Always Finished Suffix -ed was born: a captivating story that talks about his 3 different sounds, but consistent spelling in a way that brings morphology to life for young readers.

It’s all about that BASE! Why? 👉 Because th It’s all about that BASE!

Why?

👉 Because the base is doing the heavy lifting. It’s where the bulk of the MEANING lives.

In this episode of Literacy in Color, @snippetsbysarah and I unpack our signature B.A.S.E. Lesson Framework that you’ll find inside our K-2 Morphology Curriculum! @logosliteracyacademy

Comment BASE for a link to the Elise and for a FREE BASE lesson on the word “heat”, so you can see exactly what this looks like in practice. 🔥

This little Koala Timer Pal has quietly become part of our daily rhythm. We’ve been using it for timed activities at home!

What I love most?
The visual timer cue gives kiddos something concrete to follow — no over-talking, no reminders on repeat. Just a calm, predictable cue that helps them regulate and focus.

You’ll also spot Mini Kyle Breathing Pal and the Calming Pal here! They each bring their own kind of support, but today’s spotlight is definitely on our koala friend 🐨💚

🔥 Turning up the HEAT in phonics… literally. 🔥 Turning up the HEAT in phonics… literally. 🔥

If you’re teaching vowel teams (hello, ea = /ē/ 👋), this BONUS base lesson FREEBIE on <heat> is the perfect word study extension.

Instead of stopping at sounds, this lesson helps students:
✔️ connect phonics + meaning
✔️ see how words grow from a base
✔️ make sense of words like heated, heater, preheat, and heatwave (Hello, generative vocabulary growth!)

This is a sample BASE Lesson — our co-developed lesson framework from @logosliteracyacademy that’s embedded right into phonics instruction (You don’t need a separate morphology block!).

🎙️We also broke down our signature B.A.S.E. lesson plan framework on a recent episode of Literacy in Color, and now you can try it out for yourself!!

👉 Comment HEAT and we’ll send you the FREE lesson to try with your students!

Phonics is powerful… but phonics with meaning & structure? That’s where the magic happens! ✨

This is not to brag; it’s coming from a place of sheer gratitude. 🙏🏼

My podcast, Literacy in Color, is just about 14 months old and I’m just so proud of that platform.

Sometimes you’re not sure if the hours and hours of planning, recording, editing, etc. that you pour in week after week matter — or if it’s all just going into the ether.

I’m truly grateful for every download, every share, every subscriber, every rating… more than you will ever know.

Whether you’re a regular listener or if you’ve just listened to an episode or two, thank you so much for your support. It’s all for the greater good — and making an impact on student outcomes! 🩷🩷🩷
