Hilderbrand Pelzer III (@hilderbrandpelzer3 ) remi Hilderbrand Pelzer III (@hilderbrandpelzer3 ) reminds us that the school-to-prison pipeline runs straight through reading classrooms.

When students can’t read, they lose access to safety, dignity, opportunity… and freedom.

And the data he shared is impossible to ignore:
📉 Up to 85% of youth in the juvenile justice system are functionally illiterate.
📉 That’s hundreds of thousands of children — mostly boys, disproportionately Black and Latino boys — entering the system every year unable to read.

We don’t just teach reading. We giving our students freedom for their futures.

This episode is one every educator, leader, and policymaker needs to hear.

Dr. Kilpatrick shares the WHY behind manipulation tasks (researchers often use deletion): it’s to approximate if students actually have instant, automatic access to phonemes (a skill)… which essentially is necessary for orthographic mapping to occur.
