KPM x NYC = a recipe for success! If you follow KPM x NYC = a recipe for success!

If you follow the research, Dr. Katie Pace Miles has made so many contributions to the field regarding orthographic mapping and early literacy skills… but her influence goes well beyond published papers.

The work she is doing through @thereadinginstitutenyc & CUNY Reading Fellows with high-impact tutoring & intervention is something all early educators should hear about.

There are a handful of people whose work fundament There are a handful of people whose work fundamentally changes the way you think.

For me, Dr. Maryanne Wolf is one of those people.

Before I ever hosted a podcast, I was reading titles like “Proust and the Squid” and “Reader, Come Home”, trying to better understand how the brain learns to read and why that process is so beautifully complex. Having the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Wolf for this conversation was truly one of the highlights of my career.

In this episode, we explore what it really takes to build the reading circuit, as well as what it means to build a biliterate reading brain in this digital age.

We discuss:
🧠 HOW the brain builds the reading circuit
📚 Why meaning is essential (not optional) to skilled reading
⚡ The many faces of dyslexia, including challenges with fluency and retrieval
 🔄 Multi-component approaches, like RAVE-O / POSSUM
📖 Why deep reading has never been more important in today’s world

Reading proficiency isn’t built by strengthening one strand in isolation. It’s built through the interaction and orchestration of language, decoding, fluency, and meaning-making — all working together over time.

If you’re passionate about the science of reading, the reading brain, or supporting students with dyslexia, I hope you’ll give this episode a listen. It was an absolute privilege to learn from one of the field’s most influential voices.

Spoiler Alert: It’s not walking into classrooms with all the answers.

This episode is part Coaching Conversation where I’m joined by one of my favorite literacy coaches on social media, Leah Ruesink (@theearlyliteracycoach ) to talk about the transition from classroom teacher to coach — and all the learning that comes with it.
