Before we accuse words like “myth”and “rhythm” of being “irregular”…

Maybe they’re just cultured. 💅

When <y> spells /ǐ/, it’s likely Greek!

✨ crystal

English spelling carries history — and when you understand word origin plays a role, suddenly those “random” spellings don’t feel so random anymore. 👀

Honestly, the more you study morphology and etymology, the more English starts feeling less chaotic (see what I did there? 😆) and more like one giant linguistic family reunion.

💭 Your turn:
Can you think of another word where <y> spells short /ǐ/?

Drop it in the comments ⬇️ (Bonus points if I have to Google it 😂)

…and if getting nerdy about words is your thing, you’ll definitely want to join @snippetsbysarah & me inside @logosliteracyacademy ! 🤍

Literacy at the beach 🤍 Working on literacy sk Literacy at the beach 🤍

Working on literacy skills over summer vacation doesn’t have to feel like workbooks at the kitchen table.

Turn to play!

(…and to be fair, my daughter - who will be entering 1st grade - thinks this is so much fun 😂).

What does word mapping look like?
💛Say the word.
💛Segment the sounds.
💛Spell each sound.
💛Recode the word. (She should’ve said the word as one whole unit again!)
💛Alternate between sounds and spellings!

Be sure to always attach it to meaning! We played around with beach words that she has the phonics knowledge to spell! 🐚

Where can you see yourself word mapping in the wild this summer?

In exactly 20 months. 🩷

Because of this incredible community, the Literacy in Color podcast has brought me so my joy and connection.

For this milestone episode, I wanted to share a conversation about where I stand after 100 episodes.

I share:
🩷 3 hills I’d die on
🗑️3 things I hope we can leave behind
👀3 things I’m watching closely as the future of literacy unfolds

From why I believe every child can learn to read, to the role of morphology, the importance of joyful, evidence-based instruction, why I think we need to move beyond the Reading Wars, and why I believe writing is the next big frontier in literacy…

This episode is my literacy manifesto.

Thank you for every download, every review, every share, every message, every conversation, and every moment you’ve spent listening while driving to work, walking the dog, folding laundry, or planning lessons.

With gratitude:
Here’s to the first 100… 🎉

…and to the next 100. 🥰
